Bill Bunten, Topeka's mayor has temporarily changed city's name to Google. The purpose of the rename is to attract a Google project of ultra-fast broadband Internet connection. The city from March 1 will be known as Google, Kansas for a month.
On Monday, Bunten read the proclamation at a City Council meeting and the document announces that the new name is "Google, Kansas - the capital city of fiber optics." It refers to project that Google plans to implement in one of the US cities which aims to convince Internet Service Providers offer faster connection at lower price. Although the name change is unofficial, because it is not allowed by law, Bunten hopes to catch Google's attention.
This isn't the first time that Topeka changed its name. In 1998, John Wagnon, former mayor, temporarily renamed Topeka to "ToPikachu, Kansas," in reference to Pikachu which is a character from cartoons.
I think that this is a little bit ridiculous idea, but if this is the only thing that city can make to attract Google attention, then we have to appriciate mayor's willingness to make life in the city better.
