On AT&T's fourth quarter 2009 conference call, Chief Operating Officer, John Stankey, announced that the company plans to spend in 2010 $2 billion more than in previous year on upgrading wireless network. They want to "make sure it keeps up with growing demand from new samrtphones and other 3G data devices," such as the recently introduced Apple iPad.
AT&T will create 2000 new cell sites and ugrade existing ones by adding three times more fibers that there was in 2009. In the future comapany will be able to easily upgrade its network to 4G network.
Many iPhone users, particularly in densely populated areas like New York or San Francisco, have been complaining about "dropped calls, slow Internet access and poor all around service."
"But keeping up with demand on AT&T's network is a bit like shooting a moving target." Network usage grew 200% in 2009 and AT&T added 2.7 million new mobile subscribers in fourth quarter.
Stankley said that the company already made huge progress in upgrading its network and is going to continue to make upgrades in 2010.
